Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson supports the removal of police officers from the city’s high schools, concurring with the Board of Education’s decision to terminate the $10.3 million contract with the Chicago Police Department.

The Board, now largely composed of Johnson’s appointees, is moving to end the agreement, with high school principals already informed of the officers’ absence next fall.

This marks a shift in Johnson’s stance, having initially opposed officers on school grounds, then advocating for local school councils to decide, and now backing the Board’s decision.

Johnson said, “The Board of Education is moving in the direction that I do support.”

“There is an intergovernmental agreement between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Police Department. To end that agreement, there’s no qualms from me there,” he continued.

The move comes after the Chicago Teachers’ Union and CPS community called for police-free schools and reallocation of funds for critical programs.

The Chicago Teachers’ Union previously wrote, “These students along with the parents, teachers and staff that support them have looked at the data, experienced the brutality and are calling for police-free schools. Members of the CPS community are calling on the $33 million contract between CPS and CPD to be better used for restorative justice coordinators, social workers, nurses, trauma supports and other critical programs in schools.”

There are also reports of the Board aiming to vote on the CPD contract renewal this summer.
