The legacy of celebrated Blackfeet chief John Two Guns White Calf, once the face of the NFL’s Washington Redskins, has been erased due to pressure from the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI).

Efforts to save his legacy and Native American history from what some perceive as a “woke agenda” are gaining traction.

White Calf, known for his advocacy of Native American culture and his impact on American history, has been removed from the NFL and other representations in pro sports.

“The Redskins were the only minority representation in the entire NFL and it was a real person, not a mascot,” historian Andre Billeaudeaux said.

“These decisions never have popular support,” Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) president Eunice Davidson said.

“You take away self-esteem when you take away someone’s history,” Billeaudeaux said. “If things keep going the way they’re going now, in 100 years there will be nothing left of our history.”

The NCAI’s actions and its report on racism in sports mascots have been criticized for omitting White Calf’s significant role, with some arguing that the NCAI is erasing Native American heritage.
