U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor expressed frustration with the court’s conservative rulings, criticizing the “originalist colleagues” for altering established interpretations of the Constitution.
Despite this, she encouraged the audience to strive for positive change, emphasizing the importance of fighting for justice.
Sotomayor also highlighted the significance of finding common ground with those who hold differing views, citing her ability to engage in civil conversations with conservative Justice Clarence Thomas.
“Every loss truly traumatizes me,” but “I get up the next morning,” Sotomayor said.
“Change never happens on its own. Change happens because people care about moving the arc of the universe towards justice,” she said.
“It’s your turn now, to carry that burden,” she added, saying, “What choice do you have but to fight the good fight?”
“If you look for the good in people, you can deal with the bad more easily.”
