Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is deploying state law enforcement resources to the Texas-Mexico border, exacerbating tensions and defying the federal government.
His actions have sparked concerns of potential violence by extremist vigilantes and are seen as an act of provocation against President Biden.
Critics argue that DeSantis should focus on improving conditions in Florida rather than interfering in Texas.
“The goal is to help Texas fortify this border, help them strengthen the barricades, help them add barriers, help them add the wire that they need so that we can stop this invasion once and for all,” DeSantis said.
“We must sound the alarm about the dangers that lie ahead and the consequences of hate speech,” Congresswoman Veronica Escobar said.
Meanwhile, President Biden has been working on border control legislation, but Republicans seem focused on using border rhetoric to attract voters.
“What’s been negotiated would — if passed into law — be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country,” Biden said in January 2024. “It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed.”
“And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.”
