University of Texas at Austin students are demanding the reinstatement of the Monarch program, which supported undocumented students and those with temporary status.
The program was terminated due to Senate Bill 17, which banned diversity, equity, and inclusion offices and programs at public colleges in Texas.
The students argue that the program served students of all races and genders, and its closure has placed a burden on undocumented students.
“UT Austin administration has not issued a statement regarding the closure of the Monarch program and explaining the decision. Furthermore, the decision occurred behind closed doors, suddenly, and without notice,” the student group stated.
“While all other offices and divisions at UT Austin received ample time to be in compliance with SB 17, the Monarch program was not given time to address any concerns from the UT administration or legal department.”
They are also calling for a statement from the university explaining the closure and how it was affected by SB 17.
The law has also impacted other student resources and activities, leading to pushback from the student community.
