California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed shock at a Target clerk blaming him for increased shoplifting linked to criminal justice reforms he supported.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said, “That’s just not true.”
The clerk cited lowered theft penalties due to Proposition 47, backed by Newsom, as a reason for not stopping shoplifters.
In a Zoom call about a mental health proposition, Gov. Gavin Newsom says he was at a Target and saw someone walk out without paying.
He asked a worker why the person steals and they blamed the Governor before looking at him twice and recognizing him.

Newsom defended the $950 theft threshold but faces criticism for supporting lenient prosecution policies by figures like George Gascón.
