Israeli consulate official’s son, Avraham Gil, was arrested in Florida for allegedly running over a police officer with his motorcycle.
Despite his attorney’s claim of innocence and arguments for consular immunity, the U.S. State Department confirmed he is not entitled to immunity.
The officer sustained injuries, and Gil is facing charges of aggravated battery and resisting arrest.
The case has raised questions about diplomatic immunity, but unless a bilateral agreement is in effect, family members of consular officers have no personal inviolability or jurisdictional immunity.
Gil is scheduled for arraignment on Feb. 28.
