Governor Kathy Hochul of New York suggested that deportation should be considered for illegal immigrants who commit crimes, particularly those who assault law enforcement officers.

This comes after five illegal immigrants were arrested for assaulting two NYPD officers, with the attackers released without bail.

Hochul emphasized that law enforcement officers should not be subjected to physical assault and called on judges and prosecutors to take appropriate action.

“I think that’s actually something that should be looked at,” Hochul said. “I mean, if someone commits a crime against a police officer in the state of New York and they’re not here legally, it’s definitely worth checking into.”

The incident has sparked concerns about the impact of lax border policies, with over 150,000 illegal immigrants arriving in New York City since 2022, prompting calls for more federal assistance to address the situation.

“These are law enforcement officers who should never under any circumstances be subjected to physical assault,” Hochul added. “It’s wrong on all accounts and I’m looking to judges and prosecutors to do the right thing.”

Despite New York City’s “sanctuary city” status, legal experts noted that violent criminals are not protected from deportation.

“New York City does not provide sanctuary from prosecution from various violent felonies,” defense attorney Michael Bachner said. “Assaulting an officer, that is the type of offense that I believe would 100% be subject to deportation. The immigration courts, they don’t look kindly on assaulting law enforcement officials.”
