Sen. Bill Cassidy criticized Donald Trump for calling a bipartisan border security bill a “horrible open borders betrayal of America.”
Cassidy questioned if Trump has read the bill and advised him to “not be ignorant” and read it.
Sen. James Lankford also disagreed with Trump’s characterization, stating that it is “certainly not a betrayal.”
“It’s not gonna happen. And I’ll fight it all the way. I noticed a lot of the senators are trying to say, respectfully, they’re blaming it on me. I say, that’s OK, please blame it on me. Please,” he said.
“It hasn’t been released, how does he know it’s a betrayal if he hasn’t read it?” Cassidy said.
“I mean, don’t be ignorant,” he said. “Read the bill.”
“We’ve got to be able to deal with issues in law. That’s how we actually deal with things in America,” Lankford said.
These comments follow House Speaker Mike Johnson’s dismissal of the idea that he was trying to kill the bill to help Trump’s presidential campaign.
