San Francisco Mayor London Breed is under fire for a delayed $1.7 million toilet project, which has yet to be installed despite being announced 15 months ago.
The exorbitant cost has drawn criticism, with California Governor Gavin Newsom threatening to withhold funds until a more efficient plan is presented.
Residents expressed frustration over the delay, prompting discussions about the need to streamline construction regulations.
“A single, small bathroom should not cost $1.7 million,” Newsom’s spokesperson Erin Mellon said. “The state will hold funding until San Francisco delivers a plan to use this public money more efficiently. If they cannot, we will go back to the legislature to revoke this appropriation.”
“Why isn’t there a toilet here? I just don’t get it. Nobody does,” San Francisco resident Ted Weinstein said. “It’s yet another example of the city that can’t.”
“It’s worth changing the laws that are in place around construction projects like the restroom that slow things down,” Breed’s spokesperson Jeff Cretan said.
The project’s breakdown has sparked concerns about government efficiency and the city’s ability to address pressing issues.
“To unravel everything that needs to be unraveled to make government work, a lot of people have to focus on that as a very high priority,” San Francisco supervisor Rafael Mandelman said. “It’s easy to push that aside as you run from crisis to crisis.”
