A recent poll found that 56% of Democrats support or strongly support aborting babies with Down syndrome, in contrast to 58% of overall respondents who disagree with it.
The majority of Republicans and independents are against such abortions, with 75% and 58% respectively opposing the practice.
The Atlantic reported in 2020, “Nearly all expecting mothers choose to take the test; of those who get a Down syndrome diagnosis, more than 95 percent choose to abort.”
“…Since universal screening was introduced, the number of children born with Down syndrome has fallen sharply. In 2019, only 18 were born in the entire country. (About 6,000 children with Down syndrome are born in the U.S. each year),” the outlet continued.
The poll also revealed that Denmark’s prenatal Down syndrome screening led to a significant decrease in the number of children born with Down syndrome.
The condition was described as a genetic condition that can affect brain and body development, but individuals diagnosed with Down syndrome can lead happy and healthy lives with supportive care, with a life expectancy of 60 or older.
According to the Cleveland Clinic. “Down syndrome is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21.”
“This means that they have a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46. This can affect how their brain and body develop. People diagnosed with Down syndrome have happy and healthy lives with supportive care,” writes the Clinic.
