Ohio’s Republican-dominated Senate has banned gender-affirming care for minors and restricted transgender women and girls from participating in sports teams, overriding the Republican Governor’s veto.
The new law prohibits sex reassignment surgeries and hormone therapies for transgender individuals under 18 and bans transgender girls and women from sports teams.
Ohio becomes the 24th state with restrictions on transgender athletes.
“Ultimately, I believe this is about protecting human life. Many parents have told me that their child would not have survived, would be dead today, if they had not received the treatment they received from one of Ohio’s children’s hospitals,” Governor Mike DeWine said.
“I’ve also been told by those who are now grown adults that but for this care, they would have taken their life when they were teenagers.”
At least 22 states have passed laws limiting or prohibiting sex reassignment treatment for transgender minors.
The law is expected to take effect in approximately 90 days.
