Casper, a Great Pyrenees dog, has been honored with the American Farm Bureau’s “Farm Dog of the Year: People’s Choice Pup” award for bravely defending his flock of sheep from 11 coyotes in 2022.
The bureau awarded Casper with a trophy plate, Purina products, and a $1,000 cash prize donated to the LifeLine Animal Project, which cared for Casper after he was injured in the incident.
Casper the Great Pyrenees recently won the American Farm Bureau wrote, “Casper receives a trophy plate and Purina products. A $1,000 cash prize will be directly donated to [the] Atlanta-based LifeLine Animal Project at the request of Wierwille.”
“LifeLine cared for Casper after he was injured by coyotes while protecting his flock of sheep,” continued their statement.
The dog’s owner, John Wierwille, praised the breed’s loyalty and determination, emphasizing their role in protecting the animals.
Wierwille said, “They are so loyal. They are determined to stay with their animals.”
“We try to coexist with coyotes, but you come across the fence, and that’s where coexistence ends, especially for the coyotes. The dogs decide: That’s it. And that’s important. They take care of those threats,” he continued.
Wierwille posted, “Thank you also to everyone who voted for our brave, determined, and goofy livestock protector.”
“We are proud of Casper and glad he has a long life of doing what he loves ahead of him,” added the owner.
After a series of surgeries and a tail amputation, Casper has fully recovered, and Wierwille expressed pride in his dog’s bravery and determination.
