The Hollywood Reporter’s coverage of the Oscar nominations referred to the United States as “occupied” land, suggesting that the U.S. governs land inhabited by Native Americans illegitimately.

Notably, their article claimed that Lily Gladstone is the “first Native American acting nominee,” though this was later clarified, acknowledging previous nominations for Indigenous actors.

The article’s subheadline raised questions about the land currently occupied by the United States.

“Other Indigenous actors have been nominated in the past, but the ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ star is the first to come from the land now occupied by the United States,” the subheadline read.

The film “Killers of the Flower Moon” received ten Oscar nominations, including a nod for Gladstone.

The term “decolonization” was used by Gladstone in the context of gender identity during a recent interview.
