Ukrainian security services have reported that employees from a Ukrainian arms firm collaborated with defense ministry officials to embezzle nearly $40 million designated for the purchase of 100,000 mortar shells for the conflict with Russia.
Five individuals have been charged, with one detained while attempting to cross the Ukrainian border.
The investigation is part of Ukraine’s broader efforts to combat corruption, particularly in pursuit of EU and NATO membership.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges with corruption in Ukraine, despite President Zelenskyy’s anti-corruption platform and recent dismissals of top officials.
The funds have been seized and are set to be returned to the country’s defense budget.
