Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete and former University of Pennsylvania swimmer, is challenging World Aquatics in court to overturn its policy banning transgender athletes from women’s sports.
Thomas seeks to ensure fair and science-based rules for trans women’s participation in sports.
World Aquatics’ policy change, influenced by the International Olympic Committee, essentially bans biological males from competing in women’s events unless they transitioned by the age of 12 or before undergoing “any part of male puberty.”
“Lia has now had the door closed to her in terms of her future ability to practice her sport and compete at the highest level,” Thomas’ lawyer Carlos Sayao said.
“She’s bringing the case for herself and other trans women to ensure that any rules for trans women’s participation in sport are fair, proportionate and grounded in human rights and in science.”
“It’s been a goal of mine to swim at Olympic trials for a very long time, and I would love to see that through,” Thomas said previously.
