A lawsuit has been filed against Mayor Jackie Palmer of Spotswood, New Jersey, alleging that she ordered police officers to remove a Black man from a municipal building, leading to a cover-up attempt, as claimed by a senior police patrolman, Richard Sasso Jr.

The suit accuses Palmer of misusing her power and interfering with police operations.

Palmer’s attorney denies the allegations, stating that she is being targeted by some members of the Spotswood Police Department.

Attorney Eric Martin Bernstein said that Palmer “is being targeted by a handful of members of the Spotswood Police Department, who are trying to describe her as a racist and an interferer of police operations.”

“She is not interfering with nor has she interfered with, police operations nor is she a racist,” the attorney stated.

The lawsuit details an incident involving Palmer’s behavior toward the Black resident and alleges that some of her comments were captured on officers’ body-worn cameras.

The plaintiff is seeking merit-based promotion, remuneration, attorney’s fees, and the mayor’s resignation.
