Joe Kent, a right-wing Republican running for Congress, received campaign donations from a Jan. 6 Capitol rioter facing charges.
The accused, Carlos Ayala, contributed $8,600, prompting his resignation from a state election board.
Despite Ayala’s legal issues, Kent’s campaign won’t return the money, citing belief in due process.
Kent, a Trump supporter, faces criticism from his opponent, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who accuses him of aligning with extremists.
“Joe Kent enjoys enthusiastic support from white nationalists, conspiracy theorists, and members of the January 6th mob,” Gluesenkamp Perez said.
“Weird, dangerous far-right extremists know Joe Kent is one of their own, and I’m the only thing standing between Joe Kent and a seat in Congress,” she said.
The upcoming election in Washington’s 3rd District is expected to be closely contested, with Kent facing competition for the Republican nomination.
