CIA Director William Burns and Israeli intelligence chief David Barnea will meet with Qatari officials, including Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel, to discuss a potential second hostage deal for Gaza.
The Biden administration aims to facilitate the release of over 100 remaining hostages taken during Hamas’ attack on Israel in October.
The meeting follows previous efforts, including a truce brokered in November that resulted in the release of hostages.
Burns “has been … involved in helping us with the hostage deal that was in place and trying to help us pursue another one,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby stated.
The planned talks come amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, with Hamas expressing willingness to abide by a potential International Court of Justice ruling for a ceasefire if Israel reciprocates.
