Virginia’s Democrat-controlled Senate Courts of Justice Committee has advanced an “assault weapons” ban, a waiting period for gun purchases, and new controls on “untraceable” gun parts.
Lori Hass from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions praised the gun controls, emphasizing the importance of waiting periods in preventing impulsive acts of violence.
Hass said, “I think waiting periods are very integral to stopping impulsive acts of violence that include self-harm and violence towards others.”
However, critics, including Philip Van Cleave from the Virginia Citizens Defense League, argue that these measures infringe upon constitutional rights and may not effectively address gun violence, citing California’s similar regulations and high number of active shooter incidents in 2021.
Van Cleave wrote, “The Constitution is our founding document, if we ignore that, then we don’t really have the country that we think we have.”
