A GOP official, Jeff DeWit, was recorded attempting to dissuade Kari Lake from running for the U.S. Senate in Arizona by offering her money or a high-paying job.
He mentioned powerful individuals wanting to keep her out of the race and suggested financial incentives to sway her decision.
Lake rejected the offer, later discussing the episode during an appearance on Sirius XM’s Breitbart News Fourth of July Special, where she recounted the attempt to bribe her and emphasized her commitment to staying in politics.
“There are very powerful people who want to keep you out,” DeWit said, noting someone “back east.”
“They’re willing to put their money where their mouth is in a big way. So, this conversation never happened,” he said.
Lake shot back calling the “back east” individuals “corrupt.”
“Well, maybe you’re right,” DeWit said. “This never happened. I’ll get myself in trouble.”
“If you say no, which its fine, its your choice, don’t tell people.”
Despite the offer of a lucrative position, she maintained that her decision was not motivated by money but by her dedication to the country.
“Originally, I was going to name the book, I was going to title it Unafraid, and then I had a pretty high profile person come to my door and offer me money to put my movement on hold and my political career on hold — offered me a cushy job, nice paycheck, position on a board, and I said, ‘Are you kidding me? I left a cushy job…I’m not motivated by money,’” Lake said.
“And then the conversation turned, ‘Well, what would it take for you to not run for office again, at least until after 2024?’ And I thought, ’Oh my gosh, this is the kind of stuff of movies. If these people, the political elite, want me out of politics so badly that they’re willing to bribe me, that tells me I need to stay in. So that’s when I decided to add the subtitle Just Getting Started just to give them a little bit of a fear because I’m just getting started,” she said.
“So the ask I got today from back east was, ‘Is there any companies out there or something that could just put her on the payroll to keep her out?’” DeWit said.
“This is about defeating Trump, and I think that’s a bad, bad thing for our country,” Lake said.
“Just say, is there a number at which…” DeWit began.
“I can be bought? That’s what it’s about,” Lake cut in.
“You can take a pause for a couple of years. You can go right back to what you’re doing,” DeWit said.
“This is not about money, it’s about our country,” Lake said.
