Left-wing activists in Maryland are campaigning for a constitutional amendment to establish the “right” to abortion, with the Freedom in Reproduction Maryland committee leading the effort.

The amendment would enshrine reproductive freedom as a fundamental right, including the ability to make decisions regarding pregnancy.

Maryland lawmakers have voted to place the abortion ballot measure in front of voters in November 2024, and a simple majority is needed for it to pass.

“If we vote ‘yes’ on reproductive freedom, our rights will be protected well into the future, no matter who’s in office, but if we fall short, if we don’t get it done, I promise there’s always going to be someone out there looking to turn back the clock,” Maryland first lady Dawn Moore stated.

A ballot committee opposed to the amendment, Health Not Harm MD, has also been launched, expressing concerns about eliminating health and safety regulations and parental notification requirements.

“It’s just too vague and it should not apply to minor children,” former nurse and registered lobbyist for Maryland Right to Life Deborah L. Brocato said.

The initiative is reflective of a broader trend, with activists in multiple states aiming to put abortion-related amendments on the ballot in 2024 following state-level pro-abortion victories after the fall of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
