Mexico has reported the detection of US military weapons entering the country, attributing the inflow to firearms trafficking from the US fueling drug cartel-related violence.
The Mexican government has urged for an investigation into the matter and has filed lawsuits in US courts against the firearms industry.
Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena said, “It’s very urgent that an investigation be carried out.”
The US ambassador to Mexico emphasized that reducing weapon flows from the US to Mexico is a priority for President Joe Biden, as 70 percent of the weapons causing violence in Mexico originate from the United States.
The US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, said, “We know that 70 percent of the weapons that cause violence here in Mexico come from the United States.”
Mexico has tight controls on weapons sales, but drug-related violence involving firearms remains widespread, with over 420,000 murders since 2006.
