The United Kingdom achieved a milestone by using its “DragonFire” high-powered laser weapon to successfully shoot down an aerial target for the first time.
The Ministry of Defence sees this as a significant advancement in military technology, aiming to improve accuracy in targeting aerial threats such as drones while reducing reliance on traditional ammunition.
The laser-directed energy weapon has demonstrated precision targeting capabilities and is considered a low-cost alternative to certain missile tasks.
“This type of cutting-edge weaponry has the potential to revolutionise the battlespace by reducing the reliance on expensive ammunition, while also lowering the risk of collateral damage,” Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said.
“Investments with industry partners in advanced technologies like DragonFire are crucial in a highly contested world, helping us maintain the battle-winning edge and keep the nation safe.”
“These trials have seen us take a huge step forward in realising the potential opportunities and understanding the threats posed by directed energy weapons,” Dr. Paul Hollinshead said.
Both the British Army and the Royal Navy are considering integrating this weapon system into their future air defense apparatus.
The development of the DragonFire system was a joint investment between the Ministry of Defence and private industry, with the trials marking a substantial step forward in understanding the potential and threats posed by directed energy weapons.
