Nick Dunlap, a 20-year-old amateur golfer from the University of Alabama, recently won the American Express tournament at the PGA West golf course, securing a remarkable 29-under par score.
Despite his victory, he is unable to claim the $1,512,000 prize due to his amateur status, with the runner-up receiving the first-place prize instead.
Dunlap said said, “I’ve learned so much today, and I’m so grateful to be here.”
“To see some of the people rooting for me was really special,” he continued.

Dunlap’s win makes him the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since 1991 and the youngest amateur to win a tour event since 1910.
His recent successes, including winning the US Amateur championship and the US Junior Amateur championship, indicate a promising future.
This victory also qualifies him to turn professional and join the 2024 PGA Tour with automatic membership through the 2026 season.
Despite this, Dunlap remains uncertain about his future plans, emphasizing the impact of his decision on others and expressing a desire to savor the moment.
“I have to take a second to let what just happened sink in a little bit,” he explained.
“That’s a decision that’s not just about me. It affects a lot of people, and obviously, I’m going to try to enjoy this,” concluded Dunlap.
