Kroger, a major US supermarket chain, has installed sports betting kiosks in 20 stores in Ohio.
The company obtained 42 licenses as part of a program allowing betting kiosks in various locations.
Ohio has approved over 1,000 organizations for such kiosks, with estimates suggesting the sports gambling industry in Ohio could grow to billions annually.
Greg Romer, owner of a sports bar, said, “We welcome people to come in and obviously stick around.”
“That’s part of the motivation for having it,” he continued.
“People can come in and bet on a football or basketball game and sit and watch it,” he explained.
The move follows a 2018 Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to legalize sports gambling, with proponents emphasizing the potential for a regulated market to benefit various stakeholders.

President and CEO of the American Gaming Association, Geoff Freeman, said, “Today’s ruling makes it possible for states and sovereign tribal nations to give Americans what they want: an open, transparent, and responsible market for sports betting.”
“Through smart, efficient regulation this new market will protect consumers, preserve the integrity of the games we love, empower law enforcement to fight illegal gambling, and generate new revenue for states, sporting bodies, broadcasters and many others,” added Freeman.
