The U.S., Qatar, and Egypt have proposed a three-stage deal to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Israel withdrawing from Gaza and ending the war without destroying the terrorist organization.
The proposal involves a 90-day plan for a temporary ceasefire, hostage releases, prisoner exchanges, and withdrawal of forces.
However, Israel prefers a shorter pause that would allow it to pursue its objective of completely destroying Hamas’s military capabilities.
There are internal disagreements within Hamas regarding accepting demilitarization, and Israel is frustrated with the military’s inability to locate hostages.
The U.S.-backed plan aims to reduce Palestinian casualties and exploit political differences within Israel.
Despite this, there is skepticism within Israel about the plan, especially regarding Qatar’s hosting of Hamas leaders and suspicions about Egypt’s involvement in weapon smuggling to Gaza.
