The NFL has announced that they will begin the Super Bowl LVIII next month with the “Black National Anthem” as well as the actual national anthem.
This decision has sparked controversy, with some questioning the need for a separate national anthem for the black community.
The song “Lift Every Voice and Sing” has gained newfound ubiquity as a result of the George Floyd protests and the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

Critics argue that promoting a separate black anthem hinders unity and promotes division along racial lines.
Political commentator Charlie Kirk responded, “Of course, in reality, the black national anthem is performed at every Super Bowl, because The Star-Spangled Banner is the anthem of ALL Americans.”
“The effort to create a ‘black national anthem,’ and a ‘black Independence Day’ in Juneteenth, is part of a wider project to divide Americans up by race,” Kirk added.
“Let’s get back to the days where Whitney Houston showed ALL Americans how to sing about and celebrate this country,” Kirk concluded.
