Thomas Rhodes, who spent nearly 25 years in prison for his wife’s death, has filed a lawsuit against a former medical examiner and other authorities, alleging fabrication and withholding of evidence that led to his wrongful conviction.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and accuses the former medical examiner, now-deceased county attorney, and an investigator of providing false testimony.

Rhodes was initially convicted of murder but was later freed through Minnesota’s conviction review unit.

Rhodes said, “I have gained my freedom.”

“I now look forward to justice,” he continued.

The lawsuit details the circumstances of his wife’s death and the alleged improper conduct by the medical examiner and prosecutors.

A judge vacated Rhodes’ murder convictions in 2023 after a forensic pathologist found that the death was consistent with an accidental fall, leading to Rhodes’ release.
