Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned of upcoming layoffs as the company shifts focus towards artificial intelligence and other new areas.
While not on the same scale as last year’s layoffs, some teams will be affected by resource allocation decisions.
Pichai emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting affected employees and helping them find new roles within or outside of Google.
“Some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted,” wrote Pichai.
“We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year,” he continued.
“The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices …. [and] to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas,” explained the CEO.
“I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted,” concluded Pichai.
Additionally, it was reported that Google-subsidiary YouTube is laying off approximately 100 workers.
