The South Carolina House passed a bill banning gender-transition care for transgender minors, while Missouri discussed similar proposals, reflecting ongoing conservative interest in LGBTQ+ issues.
The South Carolina measure prohibits gender-transition surgeries, hormone treatments, and Medicaid coverage for those under 26.
Advocates argue that such care is life-saving, while Republicans claim it causes harm.
“Is it really about protecting minors or is it about attacking a group of people that you don’t agree with their lifestyle?” asked Rep. Marvin Pendarvis.
Rep. David Tyson Smith said, “For this to dominate the airwaves over and over again, it’s too much.”
Missouri debated anti-transgender legislation, including bathroom regulations and extending the ban on gender-transition healthcare.
These bills are part of a broader trend in red states to restrict medical care and school-related activities for transgender individuals, despite opposition from major medical groups.
