Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that it’s impossible to discuss nuclear arms control with the United States without considering the situation in Ukraine.
Lavrov accused the U.S. of seeking military dominance and rejected a proposal to separate the issues and resume “strategic stability” talks.
He criticized the West’s support for Ukraine and its alleged encouragement of strikes deep inside Russia.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia sees no interest from the U.S. or NATO in resolving the Ukrainian conflict and accused the West of conducting a “hybrid war” against Moscow.
Lavrov said, “We do not see the slightest interest on the part of either the United States or NATO to settle the Ukrainian conflict and listen to Russia’s concerns.”
“We do not reject this idea for the future, but we precondition this possibility on the abandonment by the West of its policy of undermining and not respecting Russia’s interests,” he continued.
He stated that arms control discussions could be considered in the future, but only if the West respects Russia’s interests.
