The book “American Mother” written by Diane Foley and Colum McCann tells the story of journalist James Foley, who was executed by ISIS in 2012.
Diane Foley criticizes the Obama administration’s hostage policy, describing her frustration and the lack of support from the government during her son’s captivity.
The book highlights the policy change that allowed negotiations with kidnappers and the establishment of a special envoy for hostages in 2020.
Diane Foley said, “I was so mad. I quit my job, began traveling to Washington, trying to find help.”
“I was very naive. I didn’t know anything about government really. I just assumed that people were trying to help. And the reality was there was no one whose job it was to bring Jim home,” she continued.
“They’d send me in circles. They lied to me. They were patronizing, big time,” she explained.
It also details the failed rescue attempt and Diane Foley’s emotional response to Obama’s condolences.
The book aims to shed light on journalism, compassion, forgiveness, and the emotional toll of losing a son to violence.
Colum McCann said, “It’s an important story.”
“About journalism… about compassion, about forgiveness, about losing a son. A story about anger, too, and violence,” he added.
