Google CEO Sundar Pichai informed employees to expect more job cuts at the company this year, focusing on removing layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in certain areas.

The move indicates a continued trend of job cuts as companies adopt artificial intelligence and automation.

Pichai emphasized that the role eliminations are not as extensive as last year’s reductions and will not affect every team, while also expressing the company’s commitment to investing in big priorities.

Pichai wrote, “These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team.”

“We have ambitious goals, and will be investing in our big priorities this year,” he added.

Google confirmed the internal memo but did not disclose further details.

This follows recent layoffs in various Google units, and in January 2023, Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs, representing 6% of its global workforce.
