Illinois’s “assault weapons” ban, signed into law in 2023, requires owners of semi-automatic rifles to register their guns.

However, as of January 11, 2024, only 1% of individuals with Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) cards complied with the registration requirement.

Enforcement decisions are left to law enforcement and prosecutorial jurisdictions within the state, with many sheriffs expressing reluctance to enforce the ban.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s office wrote, “The new law also requires existing owners of semi-automatic rifles to register their ownership, ensuring that law enforcement knows the location of these weapons of war and who to hold accountable if they fall into the wrong hands.”

Illinois State Police reportedly told reporters, “Decisions on how to enforce [the ‘assault weapons’ ban] will be up to each law enforcement and prosecutorial jurisdiction within Illinois.”
