Longtime “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak had an unexpected exchange with an excited contestant, Angela, who won $11,900 on the show.
Sajak initially seemed surprised by her reaction and later jokingly told her to “shut up” during the commercial break.
This led to mixed reactions from fans, with some criticizing Sajak’s behavior and others interpreting it as a lighthearted interaction.
“According to my math, by $200 –” Sajak began.
“Shut up!” the contestant cut in.
“You didn’t mean that personally?” Sajak asked.
“No… never,” she said.
“According to my math, by $233, you are the winner with $11,900,” Sajak finished.
Sajak yelled “Shut up!” at the contestant when heading to a commercial break.
“The contestant Angela yelled in excitement after winning and was told ‘Will you shut up!’ Angela did not deserve to be spoken to in that manner. Joke or not. Do better,” one fan wrote online.
“We heard that too and were horrified,” another said.
“Maybe winning $11k isn’t big to him but she was obviously excited and deserved to have her moment!” another wrote.
“Ok I went back and watched it because I was really hurt on her behalf and I missed it the first time. When he came up to her, she said ‘Shut up!’ I think he was joking back with her and his inflection and tone were ‘off.’ It doesn’t appear he said that out of nowhere. But cringe,” one X user wrote.
Despite the awkward moment, Sajak is preparing to step down from the show, with Ryan Seacrest set to take his place alongside Vanna White.
