Joy Reid of MSNBC suggested that race played a significant role in the Iowa caucuses, particularly in the context of former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley’s third-place finish.
Reid highlighted the challenges Haley might face as a woman of color in a party with strong anti-immigrant sentiments.
She also referenced Donald Trump’s “birther” claims about Haley’s eligibility to be president, despite her being a natural-born American citizen.

“It’s the elephant in the room, [Haley’s] still a brown lady that’s gotta try to win in a party that is deeply anti-immigrant,” said Reid.
“She’s getting, you know, birthered by Donald Trump,” she continued.
“That doesn’t matter. Haley was born in 1972 in the United States, automatically making her an American citizen and eligible for the presidency. The Constitution mandates that the president be a natural-born citizen, at least 35 and a resident of the U.S. for 14 years,” according to USA Today.
Reid expressed skepticism about Haley’s chances in a party with Trump’s influence.
“I don’t see how she becomes the nominee of that party with Donald Trump still around. I can’t picture it happening, maybe it could happen,” said Reid.
Additionally, she commented on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ appeal to white evangelicals.
“He’s the white guy, that he can still make the appeal to white evangelicals,” said Reid about DeSantis’ popularity.
Ultimately, Trump won by a significant margin, with DeSantis in second place and Haley in third.
