A former senior officer in the National Guard was sentenced to six years in a prison colony for purchasing ineffective equipment to protect the bridge linking southern Russia to Crimea.

The equipment, meant to bring down Ukrainian attack drones, was found to be in need of modernization and upgrading.

The officer denied guilt, stating that the equipment was intended to protect National Guard troops.

According to The Kommersant newspaper, Colonel Sergei Volkov’s mistake allowed the bridge to be “within range of (Ukrainian) fire.”

The bridge, a flagship project for President Putin, was severely damaged in 2022 by a massive explosion, which Ukrainian security services claimed responsibility for in July 2023.
