Martin Scorsese has completed a script for his upcoming film “A Life of Jesus,” co-written by Kent Jones, based on Shūsaku Endō’s book.
The film aims to explore Jesus’ core teachings without proselytizing and to present a more accessible view of organized religion.
Scorsese plans to set the film in the present day to create a timeless feel, drawing inspiration from a meeting with Pope Francis in 2023. (Trending: 2024 Miss America Winner Crowned)
Scorsese said the movie will focus on “core teachings in a way that explores the principles but doesn’t proselytize.”
“I’m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion,” he continued.
“Right now, ‘religion’ — you say that word and everyone is up in arms because it’s failed in so many ways,” said the director.
“But that doesn’t mean necessarily that the initial impulse was wrong. Let’s get back. Let’s just think about it,” he added.
“I have responded to the pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,” revealed Scorsese after the meeting.
The project holds personal significance for Scorsese, who was raised Catholic and initially considered becoming a priest.
In 2016, Scorsese said, “When I was younger, I was thinking of making a film about being a priest.”
“I myself wanted to follow in Father Principe’s [his parish priest] footsteps, so to speak, and be a priest. I went to a preparatory seminary but I failed out the first year,” he lamented.
“My way has been, and is, Catholicism. After many years of thinking about other things, dabbling here and there, I am most comfortable as a Catholic,” said Scorsese.
