The relationship between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has become strained due to differences over the handling of the war in Gaza.
Reports suggest that Biden has not spoken to Netanyahu in three weeks, following a phone call in which Biden reportedly ended the conversation abruptly.
The US is concerned about Netanyahu’s approach to ending the conflict and his reluctance to involve the Palestinian Authority in Gaza’s future governance. (Trending: Two Names Emerge As Trump’s Possible 2024 Running Mate)
“This conversation is over,” Biden reportedly said to Netanyahu before hanging up on their last call.
The Israeli leader’s comments and actions, including withholding tax revenues from the Palestinian Authority, have led to increased tension with the US.
Netanyahu’s strategy is seen as an attempt to balance support from the US while appeasing hard-right coalition partners in Israel.
“We will continue to fight with all of our might to destroy Hamas, and we will not transfer a shekel to the PA that will go to the families of Nazis in Gaza,” Israel’s finance minister Bezalel Smotrich said.
“Netanyahu is prolonging this war to stay in power,” senior Israel analyst at the Crisis Group, Mairaz Zonszein stated.
“He would tell his allies the US is pressuring him, and he can tell the US the far-right ministers are blocking him. He plays both sides.”
