The Senate will vote on a resolution by Sen. Bernie Sanders that could freeze U.S. aid to Israel unless the Biden administration reports on potential human rights violations.
The resolution is based on the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and would give Congress the authority to reduce or end aid to Israel if violations are found.
The Biden administration and many Democrats oppose the resolution, while progressive members of Congress support it. (Trending: Bombshell J6 Footage Raises Questions About Pelosi’s Team)
The resolution also requires a report on U.S. efforts to promote human rights in Israel and assess whether extraordinary circumstances justify ongoing funding.
The resolution is reportedly based on the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, which prohibits U.S. aid to any foreign government “which engages in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights.”
Sanders wrote, “This is a humanitarian cataclysm, and it is being done with American bombs and money. We need to face up to that fact – and then we need to end our complicity in those actions.”
The war between Israel and Hamas has led to significant destruction and a humanitarian crisis, with differing perspectives on responsibility for civilian casualties.
