Members of Congress, who have not received a pay raise since 2009, currently earn $174,000 annually.

Mitt Romney and others argue that this is insufficient, particularly given the need for many lawmakers to travel between DC and their home districts.

Some members, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and former Speaker Paul Ryan, sleep in their offices due to the high cost of DC rent. (Trending: 2024 Miss America Winner Crowned)

Romney said, “You have quite a number of members of Congress that sleep in their offices.”

“In this day and age, it makes sense to have people that feel that they can serve, and still be able to sleep in a home at night,” he continued.

Former Rep. Gregg Harper also attested to the financial challenge, stating that he couldn’t afford the monthly rent.

Harper testified to Congress in 2022, “We don’t know for sure how many people sleep in their offices. I was one of those.”

“[I] couldn’t afford $2,000, $2,500 a month” in rent, he added.

This situation has prompted calls for a pay increase to better support congressional members.
