A recent poll of likely Republican Iowa caucusgoers indicates strong support for former President Donald Trump in the general election, with the exception of those backing former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who show a significant preference for Democratic President Joe Biden over Trump.
The survey underscores Haley’s appeal to independents and disaffected Republicans.
While most caucusgoers believe Trump can defeat Biden, a majority of Haley’s supporters feel it will be challenging for him. (Trending: Trump Responds To Biden’s Bombing In Yemen)
Notably, Haley’s backers express concerns about Trump’s electability, in contrast to supporters of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Trump himself.
“I am more officially a Democrat who used to be a Republican and have kind of switched over, and basically I’m wanting to caucus in Iowa for the least of the worst,” poll respondent Chelsea Cheney said.
“And in looking through all of them, I think that’s Nikki Haley,” Cheney added.
“I don’t necessarily love her, but I don’t find her dangerous in ways that I find many of the other candidates dangerous.”
“Haley is consolidating the anti-Trump vote. She does well with the people who define themselves as anti-Trump,” pollster J. Ann Selzer said.
This divergence in views reflects Haley’s efforts to emphasize her viability in a general election.
