Former President Donald Trump has been granted a one-week delay to testify in a New York defamation trial, where he faces potential damages after a jury’s conclusion that he sexually abused a columnist in the 1990s.
The trial, which starts Tuesday, will hear evidence regarding compensatory and punitive damages requested by the columnist.
The judge’s order allows Trump to testify on Jan. 22, even if the trial concludes earlier.
The trial follows a prior civil jury judgment in favor of the columnist, who accused Trump of sexual abuse and defamation.
Trump’s attorney has requested fewer restrictions on his testimony, while the columnist’s attorney has expressed concerns about Trump potentially undermining the proceedings.
