California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the dates for a special election to replace former Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

The primary will be on March 19, with a special election on May 21 if needed.

This separates the special election from California’s 2024 primary on March 5. (Trending: Trump Responds To Biden’s Bombing In Yemen)

McCarthy left his position halfway through his term after losing the speakership.

“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office,” McCarthy said.

“The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”

Several GOP candidates are vying for the Republican-leaning district, and the GOP-led House is dealing with a shrinking majority.

Additionally, Congress is addressing pressing issues, including government spending, border security, and impeachment proceedings.
