Pope Francis condemned surrogacy as “despicable” and called for a global ban on the practice, citing it as a violation of the dignity of women and children.
He emphasized that a child should not be treated as a commodity and called for universal prohibition of surrogacy.
The Catholic Church prohibits surrogacy and teaches that conception should only occur through marital acts. (Trending: First Moon Mission In 50 Years Blasts Off)
“I consider despicable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child,” Francis said.
“A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract,” Francis added.
The pope’s address also covered ongoing global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict, as well as issues such as immigration, climate change, artificial intelligence, Christian persecution, and antisemitism.
“We must not forget that grave violations of international humanitarian law are war crimes,” Francis said.
