India’s top court has reinstated life prison sentences for 11 Hindu men who raped a Muslim woman during religious rioting two decades ago.
The convicts were released in 2022 after serving 14 years in prison.
The victim, who was pregnant at the time, was gang-raped during deadly communal rioting in Gujarat state. (Trending: Melania Trump Breaks Silence On Tragic Family Death)
The men were initially eligible for remission but a revised policy prohibits release for certain crimes.
The victim submitted a petition claiming, “the en masse premature release of the convicts… has shaken the conscience of the society.”
The victim’s petition led to the Supreme Court’s decision.
The 2002 riots have been linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has denied any involvement, with the Supreme Court finding no evidence to prosecute him.
