Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric M. Smith underwent successful open-heart surgery to repair a bicuspid aortic valve.

He is in good condition and will return to full-duty status after rehabilitation.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been hospitalized since Jan. 1 due to complications from an undisclosed elective procedure, prompting criticism for lack of transparency.

Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks temporarily assumed some of Austin’s responsibilities and the evaluation of potential legal notification procedure violations is underway.

Sec. Austin said he “could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed.”
