An Iranian woman, Roya Heshmati, received 74 lashes and a fine for defying Iran’s strict dress code by appearing unveiled in public places in Tehran.
The punishment was carried out in accordance with sharia law, and she was charged with “encouraging permissiveness.”
The crackdown on dress code violations increased after anti-government protests in 2022, triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for breaching the dress code. (Trending: U.S. State Passes Personal Pronoun Ban)

Heshmati, of Kurdish origins, was arrested for publishing a photo without wearing a headscarf and refusing to cover her hair even as she was transported to be flogged.
“Her penalty of 74 strokes of the lash was carried out in accordance with the law and with sharia,” and “for violating public morals,” Mizan Online wrote.
“The convicted … encouraged permissiveness [by appearing] disgracefully in busy public places in Tehran,” Mizan added.
“As the lashes struck my body, I whispered, ‘In the name of woman, in the name of life, dawn will come,’” Heshmati said.
Iran has increased surveillance and discussed tougher penalties for dress code breaches.
