The Biden administration is seeking Mexico’s assistance in curbing the record flow of migrants crossing into the U.S., but Mexico has its own demands, including financial aid and addressing root causes of migration.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called for significant U.S. actions, including deploying $20 billion to Latin American and Caribbean countries and granting legal status to millions of Hispanics in the U.S.
The U.S. wants Mexico to increase enforcement on its southern border and deport more migrants apprehended within the country.
The negotiations are crucial for the Biden administration, as the southern U.S. border saw a record number of migrants in December, impacting Biden’s re-election campaign.
